TRAUMA TRAILS BY DEBRA BEALE⁣ ⁣ “Indigenous scholar Judy Atkinson (2002) used Dadirri as a research methodology in her study, published as 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘶𝘮𝘢 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘴, 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘓𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴”. ⁣ ⁣ “We are like the tree standing in the middle of a bushfire sweeping through the timber. The leaves are scorched and the tough bark is scarred and burnt, but inside the tree the sap is still flowing and under the ground the roots are still strong. Like that tree we have endured the flames and we still have the power to be re-born”. (Edited version adapted from the writings of Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr).⁣ ⁣ Trauma Trails was developed whilst I was studying my Masters of Indigenous Studies (Wellbeing), Southern Cross University, Lismore 2011-13. I thought this would be my last resort to find help for me and my children. ⁣ ⁣ The original artwork is 1m x 1m acrylic on canvas. It represents trans-generational trauma, which I have experienced in my life and has been passed down for generations.⁣ ⁣ I now feel my pain and suffering stems from colonization here in Australia. The loss of land, culture, family, home and a belonging played a major role for me as an Aboriginal Woman from the first people of Australia. ⁣ ⁣ The feet, which are layered on top of each other represent years of trauma. The trees represent my inner deep feeling of a dark place, a forest and finally seeing a light of hope. A calling out of the dark and into the light. Mount Cook Glacier lookout The climb up all those steps nearly killed me but worthe doing. Unfortunately the glacier is shrinking at a rate of up to 800 mtrs per year. It has rapidly disappeared in the last 100 years. . . . . . . . . #mtcook #glacier #newzealand #travel #artistontour #steps #notfit #nature #environment #earth
